This game has been set in a futuristic Mayan dystopian world, where ancient gods have returned to you guessed it… take over the world! In this article, seasoned graphic designer and artist, Enrique Figueroa, walks us through one of his tutorials — how to create an isometric character in Affinity Designer. An early adopter of Affinity Designer, he purchased his copy back in after hearing about the app on Creative Bloq. Shortly after it became his tool of choice for professional work.
The idea of changing colour settings without permanently affecting your illustrations makes you want to experiment and be more daring with your art.
The more he used Affinity Designer, the more he saw its educational potential. Why not grab the day free trial and try for yourself? You might learn some handy techniques for future projects! The boss we will be creating… But before we start, what is isometric illustration? Isometric Drawing is a technique, like perspective drawing, that is used by illustrators and designers to represent three-dimensional forms on a two-dimensional picture plane.
Isometric drawings map all objects of equal dimensions as the same size, regardless of their position. This means that that objects do not diminish in size the more they recede from view, like perspective drawing.
Read this article if you want a more technical and in depth explanation of isometrics. One of the unique features of Affinity Designer is its ability to work with non-destructive transformation settings.
Note that not all vector software out there does this. Do the same with the other face and so on. Using this technique, I made two polygons. These two shapes will make the base of our video game boss. Create an Ellipse and a Donut, use a aspect ratio and same dimensions for both. Then, project them as shown above, line them up isometrically using the Isometric Grid.
Using the Pen Tool , trace a path following the blue dots upper-left image. Make sure each point touches the edges of the underlying shapes. Your focus should be on its corners; I repeat, make sure that your corners are touching the ellipse and the donut edges. Fill this new path the same as the Ellipse, select both and using the Add function merge them into one.
Create some duplicates of this new shape and use the Node Tool to alter their sizes and proportions as shown above, and then change theirs colours. Try to build something similar to the image shown above, without following any instructions. The cylinders 1 , the rounded polygon family 2 , the arms 3 and the little pyramids 4.
Notice that all of these pieces make sense because I gave them purpose. I start by creating random objects then I try to figure out what to do with all of them. This is not a puzzle with a single solution, you can move around the parts, create more of them and more ideas….
Inspired by Mayan and Aztec cultures graphics, I made some simple graphics above , to see how they fit in my video game boss design. Do not hesitate to go back a few steps in this tutorial if something is still not entirely clear.
Duplicate the front face again, reshape it to create a small vertical stripe and duplicate it to place both above the nose. Repeat these steps on the top face, aligning both stripes to the ones on the front. The last copy-paste-transform technique will allow you to experiment and create quick and intricate designs in a snap!
Attach the mouth to the rest of the body, and the monster is done! Isometric Illustration can be super easy when using the right tools. Getting your head round new software can sometimes seem daunting. So its creators, Serif, have produced a vast library of tutorial videos to help users learn all they need to know about the app. You can check them out on their YouTube channel here. Group these shapes and, put them aside for now. Create a rectangle using the proportions you prefer With the Corner Tool, select its upper-left corner and round it just a little bit. Duplicate it and align this duplicate isometrically. Create a new path to fill the blanks. Select the new path, the duped shape and merge both using the Add Send the resulting shape to the back.
Finally, change the right face colour to a darker shade. Pyramid As above, create a new square and project it facing upwards Trace a vertical line across the square to use it as a guideline With the Pen Tool draw a triangle in whichever size you prefer. Just make sure its vertices touch the points shown in Repeat this step on the opposite side. Now, we put all parts together. This is not a puzzle with a single solution, you can move around the parts, create more of them and more ideas… Part 3: Having Fun with Details Inspired by Mayan and Aztec cultures graphics, I made some simple graphics above , to see how they fit in my video game boss design.
Do the same on the other side. We can also create some cool motion effects just by going off the boundaries. Duplicate the top face, shrink down this duplicate. Do the same on the right face, making multiple clones and alternating their sizes. Group the resulting paths. Scale this group Align the first Group and the merged path using the Isometric Grid. Fill the blanks using the Pen Tool as we have previously when creating the cylinders in this tutorial. Select these paths and the background shape and, merge them down.
If you want, add some teeth using the same techniques. Where can I find other Affinity tutorials and information? Want to learn more about Affinity Designer? Back again with another question for this awesome community. I of course used the search function and found some related questions in and early where MEB commented that this feature was on the roadmap and would eventually be released. I'm hoping for 2 things I am currently recreating a logo for a client not my favorite task in the least and his logo was pixel based, created in photoshop, and skewed for the final effect. In photoshop, I used the perspective crop tool to make it a more head-on view so I can create the logo first.
I have recreated it in Affinity Designer and before adding all of the effects, I would like to skew the perspective to match his original logo. I can easily do it in Photoshop but then we're back to raster graphics and square one. For the Affinity Designer geniuses here, give me some options. For the mods, please let me know if this is in a beta version that I can install or when the feature may be available in a future update.
I am attaching some images so you get a better idea of what I am working with here. Again, not my art or creation so go easy me as it's not the greatest design in my opinion. Towards the bottom right of the app you should see a Transform Tab at the bottom right of this tab there will be a Shear Field see attached. You can use this field to Skew your object without manually moving the nodes :.
I am familiar with this function but unfortunately, I need to distort the perspective as well and the shear function is limited in that regard.
I do thank you for your prompt reply but this won't work for my application. If you have a moment, take a quick look at the files I attached in my original post. If that isn't able to do the job then unfortunately you may struggle with achieving this in Designer. Eg magenta, yellow, nuetrals, black, white, cyan etc etc. I still have to go over to PS express or Lightroom for this feature. Aside from being free, I love the apps UI is touch optimised, I can swipe up and down to change between parameters within a tool, makes the interface a lot cleaner and easier to use and progressively learn, instead of bombarding me with a whole of tools.
I love Snapseed photo editing tool and use it constantly on both my iPhone and my iPad. It is not over complicated and is so easy to use. It can make almost any photo look great. This review would have certainly been a 5 star rating except that I have recently bought a new Apple Mac M1 and prior to purchasing the laptop I had read that Snapseed was available for Mac OS.

Having the ability to distribute objects on your canvas in an organized and evenly-spaced way is an essential function for graphic designers. This is especially true for some of the more advanced In this tutorial we'll be going over how you can resize the artboard in Illustrator.
This is done by using a dedicated tool that allows you to scale the width and height in a multitude of Skip to content. Muchas gracias, Un saludo. To free transform with Affinity Photo, use the Move Tool keyboard shortcut: V for moving, scaling, rotating, and shearing objects. Become A Master of Adobe Illustrator!
I haven't played with Inkscape so I will have to check it out. Thanks for the reply! I have Affinity Photo but I am trying to keep everything vector he requested this for a metal business card application he is working with.
Once I throw it into Affinity Photo it will have to be rasterized. I have used Affinity Designer Betas in the past with great results when new features were on the brink of release.
I was hoping that this feature may be in the latest beta so I could load it and try it out. I've been assuming that Affinity will aim to do anything DrawPlus can do as a baseline, even if it achieves that in different ways. But I could be wrong By the way, you can copy and paste objects from DrawPlus to Affinity, so that's a possibility.
